I remember the fun and excitement about changing our clocks — forward or back. Every room’s clock was checked, batteries replaced and in later years it was the time to check the batteries in smoke detectors. It was confusing at first to decide if it was OK to change before you went to bed? Would it be the same as changing early in the morning as was stated by the people who authorized such a worldwide time pheromone? Would some government agency check to see if we’ve done things properly? The excitement to see daylight so early then the disappointment with evening coming on so soon.
Not so much today. The digital world has changed the whole process. There’s a whole generation who will never feel the excitement of it all –time will just “happen” as their digital clocks all tuned to the national clock wizard magically change with little knowledge on the part of the owners. Even the smallest new clocks offer electronic connection to the digital czar to keep everyone on time. Except of course for those few bandit states “…and territories in the United States that do not observe daylight saving time, aside from most of Arizona, include: Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.”
I’m very glad to have grown up in a generation where these new things are born, new ideas developed having such an impact on everyone! So new, so much fun to be experienced! The excitement in this small thing is not a fate of the free world thing, just another small grain of sand on the beach of technological enhancements, technological changes that numb us to our world.
